About

The International College of Surgeons (ICS) Bangladesh Section has a rich history of being a part of the larger global community of surgeons, and it is now being reactivated to continue its mission of promoting international understanding, goodwill, and peaceful development of the art and science of surgery.

Founded in 1935 by Dr. Max Thorek, the ICS was created to bring surgeons from all over the world together to build a force for international cooperation and understanding. Today, the ICS has members in over 100 countries, with the majority of its membership outside of the United States. The College is organized into six federations, including the Asian Federation, of which the Bangladesh Section is a part.

The ICS is a non-governmental and non-lobbying organization that is apolitical, and it is in official relations with the World Health Organization as a non-governmental organization. The College's principles of inclusivity and collegiality stand in bold contrast to the racism, religious and ethnic hatreds that confront professionals in their daily lives globally.

The reactivation of the ICS Bangladesh Section is a significant step in promoting these principles in Bangladesh. Led by Dr. SAUMITRA SARKAR, an ICS member-at-large, the Section aims to foster closer ties between surgeons in Bangladesh and their colleagues around the world. With 58 active members-at-large, the ICS Bangladesh Section has a solid foundation for achieving its goals.

The International College of Surgeons Bangladesh Section, in line with the College's overall mission, is dedicated to promoting the highest standards of surgical practice, education, and research. Through its network of members around the world, the ICS Bangladesh Section will continue to build bridges between surgeons of all nations, races, and creeds, furthering the College's vision of a world where surgical knowledge is shared and exchanged freely.

OUR MISSION AND VISION

A HOME FOR SURGEONS

Our mission is a simple one, that hasn’t changed since we were founded in 1935 by Dr. Max Thorek. He had a simple vision, one that launched an organization that has remained a leading source for international collaboration in surgical science for over eighty years. That mission is:

To foster worldwide surgical excellence through education, training, fellowship and humanitarian efforts

MAX THOREK’S VISION

Surgeons need to come together as a community, to grow with one another and have the access to the knowledge and experience of their peers to succeed. Max Thorek saw that in 1935, and founded this organization to meet that goal. His vision was to improve the lives of patients through the development and education of our members and the advancement of the medical field. It’s about the people, and the impact we, as surgeons, have on our patients every day.

“There is no human calling which demands from those who follow it a greater endowment of the best human qualities and the highest developments of technical knowledge and skill than art of surgery.” —Max Thorek, Modern Surgery, 1939

THE PICTURE TODAY

In over eighty-five years of existence, the International College of Surgeons has grown to a world-class organization on six continents and hundreds of countries. We come together every day with surgeons in every time zone, every continent, and nearly every country around the globe. Our humanitarian missions have saved the lives of tens of thousands of people, be it a simple improvement to their everyday life or a life-changing surgery required to keep them alive.
